Ranking Member Scott Statement on September Jobs Report

WASHINGTON – Ranking Member Robert C. “Bobby” Scott (VA-03) released the following statement after the Bureau of Labor Statistics announced that the economy added 336,000 jobs in September as the unemployment rate remained unchanged at 3.8 percent. Under President Biden’s leadership, the economy has added roughly 13.9 million jobs.

“Today’s jobs report demonstrates that, despite House Republicans’ extremism and inability to govern, the Biden-Harris economic agenda is working.  In Congress, Democrats have prioritized legislation that puts people over politics and builds the economy from the bottom up and middle out.  As a result, the unemployment rate has remained below four percent for the longest period of time in approximately 50 years.

“House Republicans’ disarray, however, poses a real threat to the economy’s progress. With only minutes to spare, our economy averted a completely avoidable shutdown last week.  A shutdown that would have cost the economy between an estimated $6 billion and $13.5 billion each week in lost economic activity.

“We find ourselves once again roughly a month out from another potential government shutdown, and the House Republicans’ civil war continues to jeopardize the services Americans need.  This level of dysfunction is completely unacceptable and out-of-sync with the priorities of working families, who are counting on their representatives to be responsible stewards of our economy.  The American people deserve better.”
